Halloween Contact Lenses Can Be Scary -- for Your Eye Health

    Last updated 10 days ago

In Australia, we don’t tend to celebrate Halloween as a holiday as much as the Americans do, so we’ve never really had a huge scare in terms of costuming with contact lenses. Even though, we should still follow the basic rules that the American Academy of Ophthalmology has set down for us in this video. Most of it is basic common sense that people forget to heed from time to time.

Don’t swap your contact lenses with other people. This is self-explanatory as you don’t know what eye diseases the other person might carry, and conjunctivitis is an extremely easy disease to spread.

Don’t buy contact lenses that haven’t been prescribed for you. This is an interesting one as there are actually many reputable stores in Australia now that sell them off the shelf. If you are concerned about buying these, you should consult your local optometrist about how he/she feels about them before making a purchase.

Don’t sleep in your contact lenses. This is clearly for the people who are too lazy to take them out after a night out. The video doesn’t mention this but the lens can scratch your eye if it moves while you’re sleeping.

Last but not least, take good care of your contact lenses and don’t leave them exposed and covered in eye shadow as Natalie did. Because if you do, as the video so ominously tells us, you’ll be like Natalie who can’t see much anymore.

If you’d like to improve your eyesight without the risks of lenses, laser eye surgery could be just the thing for you. Call the experts at Queensland Laser Vision today on (07) 3188 1952 for a consultation.

How Laser Eye Surgery Affects Pilots

    Last updated 3 days ago

It cannot be emphasised enough how essential good vision is to air force pilots, they rely on their eyes to fly heavy machinery in and out of difficult situations every day . The high pressure environment and total reliance on 20/20 eyesight means that anything that falls short can become an instant disqualification from flying.  There is already a shortage of defence pilots in the RAAF, so the Australian government can’t afford to lose professional and qualified fliers due to eye issues. Because of this, the ADFA is encouraging recruits to go for laser eye surgery.

Although there are some acknowledged risks with laser eye surgery, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages, especially where pilots are concerned. Glasses or spectacles can often become entangled in helmets and are often unsuitable for fast-moving situations while contact wearers can get dry eyes in the sky making them more prone to eye infections.

Laser eye surgery can do away with all of that and remedy a number of vision problems including far-sightedness, near-sightedness and astigmatism. And because ADFA believes in laser eye surgery as a safe and beneficial procedure, they offer funding for refractive surgery for selected personnel.

ADFA is not the only one encouraging their pilots to go for laser eye surgery, NASA and the US army are also big advocates of LASIK for their pilots and air crew members, going so far as to allocate huge amounts of spending on surgeries for their respective organisations. It’s becoming a standard procedure for defence force workers all around the world.

If you work for ADFA or are in the aviation industry, laser eye surgery could be just the thing for you so call the experts at Queensland Laser Vision today on (07) 3188 1952 for a consultation. Should you find that you are having issues with your eyes and require immediate attention, it is recommended that you have regular eye tests with your local optometrist in order to ensure their wellbeing.

Queensland Laser Vision Talks About How Facial Hygiene Can Affect the Eyes

    Last updated 3 days ago

In this modern day and age, we are taught from a very young age to take good care of our faces. We are supposed to scrub, tone, exfoliate, cleanse and moisturise at the very least and that’s not counting weekly hair removal and monthly mud masks. We do all of this to our faces but very often we neglect our eyes and even sometimes hurt them in the process of all this cleansing, well we’re going to remedy that by teaching you how to protect your eyes during your everyday washing-up routine.

    Keep the face clean

Actually one of the best things you can do for your eyes is to keep your face clean, you can’t eliminate dirt and bacteria entirely but studies have shown, you can help to prevent eye disease by simply keeping your face as a clean space. So keep up with the daily scrubbing.

Be careful where you put that!

However, many creams and lotions carry alcohol and chemicals that can be irritating to your eyes, so if you can avoid the eye area when you clean it would be the best thing for your eyes and prevent them from being sore afterward. Also if you are going to apply lotions near that area, there are plenty of products that are specifically made for being gentle on the eyes. Invest in throw away-make up pads which are a lifesaver for your eyes.

    Don’t touch your eyes

If you do get something in your eye, do not reach your finger in to dig it out. That is the fastest way to give yourself an eye infection. The eye has a natural cleaning process and so in most cases, blinking rapidly will help dislodge it. If it still doesn’t come out, flush it out under a running tap or try eye drops. If this still doesn’t work, do not reach into your eye with your fingers. Tag a calm driver to take you to the doctor.

Should you find that you are having issues with your eyes and require immediate attention, it is recommended that you have regular eye tests with your local optometrist in order to ensure their wellbeing. And you should look after the wellbeing of your eyes, they’ll thank you in the long run. Start taking care of them today!

Queensland Laser Vision really care about the state of your eyes, for any questions or even just a quick chat about vision correction, call them on (07) 3188 1953 for the best advice around.
